Leeds Trinity Journalism & Media Week: The Dark Finesse Behind Success

Leeds Trinity journalism and media week was the host to the likes of English broadcaster; Piers Morgan, English football commentator; Guy Mowbray, Film director; Manon de Reeper and the homegrown talent, the Leeds Trinity University alumni (Alex Chen, Eman Shah, Katie Haseldine, Otis Holmes and Charlie Russel.) All of the speakers who appeared at the annual event spoke with confidence, passion and wisdom as they laid their advice in front of the young budding journalists and enthusiasts in attendance.

The bravery shown was immense as many of the speakers shared their insight to some of the tougher aspects of a job in the media field as the film director Manon de Reeper briefly spoke about the troubles she had with an aggressive and threatening fellow filmmaker saying ‘’it was not a fun experience’’ before quickly moving on. Similarly, Guy Mowbray (pictured right) shared the story of how he spends a lot of time away from family discussing how it is both difficult and rewarding.

All of the speakers in attendance were all very successful in their respective fields, however, not a single one of them appeared above the room, they were relatable, friendly and more than happy to tailor to the young journalists requests as the alumni panel offered the advice they wished they had received when studying providing gems such as ‘mistakes are okay’, ‘take every opportunity’ and ‘keep plugging away’.

Despite the troubles that many of the speakers had endured throughout their careers, they provided advice and personal insight into how they deal with difficult situations and how the budding journalists could follow suit  to make the most of the opportunity they have to get their voices out into the world as Guy mowbray said, ‘never, ever say no… first say yes and figure the rest out later’.

With the advice given, it’s clear to see that, for anyone willing to listen, there is a bright future ahead! Written by Dale Rosso 17/11/23
